Inclusion, on the other hand, involves everyone and celebrates each individual's uniqueness, such as their background and culture. Equity ensures fair treatment and access to opportunities for all, aiming to eliminate prejudice and discrimination. As a Diversity and Inclusion Ally in your business, you're taking a stand known as an "alliance" (Ally). You're willing to invest time in educating yourself about the experiences of your diverse audiences, staying well-informed about the issues and challenges they face. You use this powerful knowledge to make informed business decisions that support diversity, inclusion, and equity in your online business operations.Consider this: if you were going on holiday to a place you've never been before, what would be your first actions to feel a part of this wonderful new country? My guess is the first step is to do some research and understand the dos and don'ts.I'm fairly confident you would consider which side of the road to drive on to avoid accidents or receiving fines or jail sentences. The same holds true for diversity and inclusion; to truly understand how to become more diverse and inclusive, you must first appreciate the richness of individual differences and then adapt your business to your diverse audience.Remember, the aim of the game is to adapt to your diverse customers, not the other way aroundTopic 2 Key Area of ImprovementConfidence in Diversity and InclusionDiversity and inclusion is a very sensitive subject and it is normal to feel that you do not have the confidence to take the next steps because you are unsure what to do, when to do it and how to do it.The best way to start is by asking the question to your diverse audience on what they need and want and taking the steps to implement them straight away.Try to stay away from assumptions or being on the fence as this can send the wrong message about your intentions or your business.Always have this in mind:“Diversity is being invited to the party and Inclusion is being asked to dance”- Verna Myers Topic 3 Key Area of ImprovementPriority, Goals & Strategy in Diversity and Inclusion Businesses that embrace diversity and inclusion outperform financially by 25% compared to those that do not and this gap is widening year on year according the McKinsey report 2020. In order to champion diversity and inclusion and be the business diversity and inclusion champion you are striving to become, you will need to first understand it is not just about bringing more diverse customers into your business it is also about how you truly provide a sense of belonging and how have you integrated diversity, inclusion and equity into your overall business strategy. You should begin by thinking about your own pain points in having a diverse and inclusive business? And those of your diverse audience? Then focus on what is my diversity and inclusion vision for the future? When do you want to achieve this?Who will help you get there? Then you will be able to pull out your goals. This should be clear SMART goals and priorities that align with your long term vision for your diverse and inclusive business. SMART Goals simply means:-Specific-Measurable-Achievable-Relevant-Time bondThe strategy for diversity and inclusion in your business needs to take into consideration all facets of your business operations. These could be anything from reviewing your website and social media posts to the way you advertise or even recruit into your business. Why is that important? A diverse audience wants to feel they belong and are included and that you invested in them in every areas of your business and in taking this step you gain loyalty and repeat customer. Topic 4 Key Area of ImprovementDiverse Products and Services One way to truly show your commitment to embracing diversity in your online business is by investing back into the audience that you are trying to win with the main purpose of supporting other diversely owned or black and ethnically diverse businesses and in particular paying attention to the most underrepresented Black Owned Businesses.Did you know? Your black audience are by far the most underrepresented population in the world and statistics show that it would take nearly 250 years for a black person to build the same wealth as a white person today (IPS). As a business diversity and inclusion champion and ally you can play your part and accelerate this by buying black-owned suppliers and services, offering scholarships and even consider recruiting from diverse backgrounds into your teams or outsourced suppliers and in doing so you will be level the playing field, boost black and ethnic minority ecosystem and tapping into a richer bank of knowledge and experiences which will help your business offerings speak volumes to your diverse audience. Other benefits of having a diverse products and service supply chain include:1. Strengthen Local economies 2. Visibility and representation on social responsibilities 3. Celebrates Black culture and serves communities 4. Close the racial wealth gap 5. Protects the future generations Zenith Bank (UK) Ltd - Zenith Bank (UK) Ltd, which has its headquarters in London, was authorised by the FSA in 2007 and has embraced and promoted online banking. A variety of financial services are available, including Cross Border Trade Finance, a comprehensive range of Treasury Services, and Family Office, Wealth Management and business banking.StartTeck - A London-based creative business uses carefully crafted branding and websites to bring new ideas to life..Calenderly - black owned Cloud-scheduling platform many did not know was black owned and is a software company that develops a business communication platform used for teams to schedule, prepare and follow up on external meetingsRise Fund N’Go- Crowdfunding for black owned businesses and projects focused on the progress of black people. Find a business and go ahead and contribute. Topic 5 Key Area of ImprovementCommunicating to Diverse AudiencesIt is very important that you communicate to your diverse audience in the right way that truly speaks to them and this includes the language you use and how you use it.The best practice is to avoid any sweeping statements without having backed up what you are saying with concrete evidence. This means that you should avoid stating “I support diversity in our business” and when someone reviews your business practices you do not have any representation of diversity or inclusion. Also be aware of ‘token’ gestures or input e.g. adding one black person in your speaker line-up is not being diverse and will be spotted. Try instead to aim for a fair split and be intentional about it..The diverse audience needs to feel you are a business that can be trusted therefore pay close attention to not just what you say but how you say it and if unsure seek an experts input experts like me at Samantha Lubanzu Coaching Ltd Topic 6 Key Area of ImprovementSubtle ImpactDiversity and Inclusion does not stop at just knowing the information and making a quick decision to share content, marketing or advertise to your diverse audience without first considering the subtle impact it may have and therefore how it may land.Instead, test it out to a small sample and ask for feedback first and be honest that you are still in the learning stages and appreciate that you may still make mistakes. That's how we all grow!Topic 7 Key Area of ImprovementLegal Responsibilites Are you compliant in the country you operate in?Each country you operate in will have their own rules and regulations and it is important that you seek guidance on being compliant in all the countries you operate.Example: in the UK if an individual believes that a business( no matter size )has discriminated against them they have the right to claim under the Equality Act 2010 and the payout is unlimited. This is an area that cannot be ignored.Topic 8 Key Area of ImprovementUnconscious BiasEveryone has an element of unconscious bias and you may do, think and say certain things without even thinking about it and therefore not identifying the impact this may have on your diverse audience’s e.g. ageism - you are too old to do that! Weight bias- you’re too overweight to run! Gender- women are weak etc. What does need to take place is that business owners need to think before they act and make a decision that they will step out of their comfort zone and be comfortable with being uncomfortable and learn how they need to adapt and change their attitudes and thinking that may have a negative impact on to your diverse audiences now and in the future.Strategies include:-Increase your interactions with diverse groups - Avoid Stereotyping -Structure decision making - Learn more - Seek out relevant training Topic 9 Key Area of ImprovementMoral Case and Business CaseWe all know that the moral case for embracing a diverse and inclusive business is that it is simply the “right thing to do” and why would you not want to represent the diverse world we live in and that to be reflected in your business operations.Did you know that there is also a business case for diversity and inclusion in your business operations? It is known that businesses that embrace a diverse and inclusive environment significantly outperform financially by 25% more than those that do not. The increased benefit on the UK market alone is estimated at 24 billion a year representing 1.3 of GDP (McGregor- Smith Review) and this goes into trillions in US markets It is also known that black and ethnic diverse backgrounds have the most dominant spending power in the world therefore it not only makes sense morally to embrace a diverse and inclusive business operation but it also makes sense for the long term financial success of your business. It is a win-win! Topic 10 Key Area of ImprovementSafe & CelebratedIt is important to remember everyone wants to feel safe, have a sense of belonging and feel like they truly matter. All businesses can take the step to celebrate all that makes someone unique in their everyday life including festivals like national women's day, Christmas or Ramadan and to be included in groups and show pictures that represent and truly celebrate who they are.Call to ActionJoin my best- selling Diversity & Inclusion Evolve®An On-Demand Course Making Diversity, Equity, And Inclusion Simple To Understand And Implement! If you’ve ever wanted to tap into the £24 billion industry of diverse audiences and be on the cutting edge of D&I, but have no idea where to begin and are afraid of doing or saying the wrong thing join by clicking here now!
